Director / Producer: Sonia Arrubla

A native of Colombia, Ms. Arrubla began her theatrical career as an actress at the age of 15 when she was invited to join Teatro Libre de Bogotá. One of the most important theater companies in Colombia, Teatro Libre gave her the opportunity to perform in the classics, as well as contemporary plays. In the eight years she was a member of the company, she toured the world—and virtually every town and city in her native land. As a young adult, Arrubla gained a national following when she moved to television, where she acted in mini-series, sitcoms, and numerous soap operas.

Arrubla moved to the United States in 1994 to segue into directing, enrolling at New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts, where she earned her undergraduate degree in film and television. She then completed her education with an MFA in film at NYU’s world-renowned master’s program. At NYU, Arrubla wrote and directed several short films, including “Sobrevivir,” winner of the 1999 Warner Brothers’ Award.

In addition to her experience as an actress and director, Arrubla has served as a writer, producer, editor, and sound designer for various productions. Recently, she was the senior editor of the Mexican feature documentary “La Santa Muerte,” which has been well received in international film festivals.

Since 2002, Arrubla has been the driving artistic force behind Multi-Arts, a youth arts organization based in the Pioneer Valley of western Massachusetts. As Multi-Arts Artistic Director, she has produced and directed twelve plays and worked with more than 200 children ages 6 through 14. In the fall of 2005, Arrubla founded Eat Your Broccoli Theater Company with which she produced and directed the premiere of the critically acclaimed play “Bubble Trubble.”
